A UNIQUE APPROACH TO EDUCATION

With the discussion of the Common Core and the need to change our K-12 curriculum - we are returning to a Renaissance, of sorts.
The Renaissance was a rebirth of classic ideals brought back to life by artists and scholars. More than nostalgia for a classical past, more than just a longing for ancient texts and structures, it was a conscious calling to draw upon proven traditions, to reach back to that which had stood the test of time, and a decision to restore what worked.  Simply stated - less testing and more academic freedom for our students and teachers.
It was from the Roman writer and architect, Vitruvius, that Leonardo di Vinci, the quintessential Renaissance man sourced his work on proportionality. From Rome’s De Architectura we now know the Renaissance Vitruvian Man.
It is with this same sense of order, proportionality and deliberation that the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSAKC) seeks to improve education by returning to what works: strong values and parental involvement; family-oriented, small, collaborative learning communities; and academic excellence.
A+ (ARTS-BASED) CORE VALUES

Metropolitan School of the Arts will adopt the A+ instructional model that was originally developed in North Carolina in 1995 by the Kenan Institute for the Arts. In 2003, the program was moved to the University of North Carolina - Greensboro.  In 2009, the A+ program was transferred to the North Carolina Arts Council with over 40 schools adopting this school-reform model.  This arts-based academic model has been adopted by the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.  There are several individual schools that are part of the A+ consortium in other states.  This academic model has been implemented in schools at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Each A+ School is bound to the “8 Essentials Framework”.  The 8 essential standards are: Arts, Curriculum, Experiential Learning, Multiple Learning Pathways, Enriched Assessment, Collaboration, Infrastructure, and Climate.
